Around Cape Peninsula

The most scenic parts of the Cape Peninsula can be seen on this drive.

Take the M3 out of the city and keep following the directions to Muizenberg.

You will pass Groote Schuur Hospital (left), site of the world's first heart-transplant, and the whitewashed Mostert's Mill (left), before climbing over Wynberg Hill and down into the Constantia Valley.

After about 18km the M3 ends at a T-junction. Turn left on to the M42, then right at the next T-junction on to the Main Road (M4). Keep to this road as it skirts Muizenberg and then winds along the False Bay coast through Fish Hoek to Simon's Town.

If you have the time (and it's not windy), Muizenberg and Fish Hoek have excellent swimming beaches. Simon's Town, home of the South African Navy, is worth visiting for its delightful Victorian shopfronts and pleasant waterfront development on the harbour.

Going south from Simon's Town on the M4 you soon reach the turn-off to The Boulders (left).

At The Boulders, a pretty beach set among huge granite boulders, you should stop to view the fascinating jackass penguin colony on the beach.

Continue south on the M4 until the road climbs away from the sea, becoming the M65, and reaches the turn-off (left) to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and Cape Point.

If you have the time, make the detour through the nature reserve to visit Cape Point; the restaurant there offers stunning panoramic views over False Bay.

Keep following the M65 across the peninsula to the other side. Skirting the Atlantic coast via Scarborough and Kommetjie you reach Sun Valley. Turn left here and follow the M64 (Ou Kaapse Weg, 'Old Cape Road') over the mountain. (At the time of writing the beautifully scenic M6 from Sun Valley via Chapman's Peak to Hout Bay was to be re-opened shortly. Take it if it is open.)

At the highest point of the Ou Kaapse Weg you will see the entrance (left) to the Silvermine Nature Reserve. There are easy walking paths around the picturesque dam.

When the Ou Kaapse Weg ends at a T-junction turn left on to the M42 and continue on it until you come to the M41. Turn left here and drive along the winding road that climbs up to Constantia Nek.

Soon after turning on to the M42, pass Pollsmoor Prison (right) where Nelson Mandela spent several years. Drive through Tokai Forest and the vineyards of Constantia. On the M41 is the turn-off (left) to Groot Constantia.

From Constantia Nek descend via the M63 to Hout Bay.

Stop at Hout Bay for seafood at Mariner's Wharf. There are boat trips from here to nearby Duiker Island, where you can see seals, bank cormorants, Cape cormorants, Cape gannets, kelp gulls and arctic skuas.

The M6, a coastal road with magnificent views, takes you from Hout Bay past Llandudno to Camps Bay.

Both Llandudno and Camps Bay have beautiful, white, sandy beaches, ideal for sunbathing, but very cold water.

Just past Camps Bay turn right off the M6 on to Lower Kloof Road, then very soon sharp right on to Kloof Road. This takes you through the 'Glen' up to Kloof Nek. From there descend via Kloof Nek Road back down to the city.
